A magical home originally named “Hobbit House,” in Waimanalo, HI, on the island of Oahu, skews more modern and luxe than Middle Earth. It’s so artfully designed that the seller, who has owned the property since its 2003 construction, even officiates at weddings on the picturesque grounds.

With koi ponds, stone paths, a rock waterfall, and footbridges, this four-bedroom, 2.5-bath home—which is listed at $3.75 million—is only a few steps from the sand. Waimanalo Beach, right across the street, hugs Waimanalo Bay and is continually ranked as one of Hawaii’s best beaches—as well as in the United States.

This storybook-style home is tucked into a residential area and adjacent to Sherwood Forest, a beachfront green space filled with pines, not palm trees.

“It adds to the magical quality of it,” says listing agent Cheryl Shope of Sotheby’s International Realty, about the neighborhood. “It’s so quiet and peaceful there.”

Waimanalo is a community on the eastern shore of Oahu, a 35-minute drive from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, and 20 minutes from shopping and restaurants in Honolulu’s Waikiki Beach.

Throughout, only the finest of materials were used, including cedar shingles arranged in layers on the roof to resemble waves, 25-foot Ohia posts in the central foyer, lava rock, Indonesian hardwoods, and a cantilevered staircase taking full advantage of ocean views.

Fruit trees flourish in the garden, and there’s an outdoor hot tub nestled in the lush foliage, along with a koi pond and water feature built into a rock wall, creating an “island nirvana,” as the listing description puts it.

“These people custom-built this house,” says Shope. “It was an idea this couple had, with no intention of selling it.” A lifestyle change has forced them to put their dream home on the market.

Who might move into the house next? Given the robust weddings business, it could be another officiant or wedding planner, says Shope.

“Or maybe somebody who’s artistic—an artist, musician or a writer. There’s a lot of things about the house that could be your muse,” she says. “You can see the start and mountains from the house.”

There is also an apartment on property that could serve as guest quarters, rental income or a studio.

The enchanting abode could also attract a harried executive—“somebody who has a really busy life,” says Shope. “You close the gate, and you literally don’t see anyone, yet the beach is only 50 feet away. It leaves the whole world outside and transports you.”
