This log cabin on 2 acres by the ocean in Big Sur, CA, fools the eye. From the outside, it appears rustic, simple, and unadorned.

However, its interiors—a full 2,400 square feet—adopt a cozy, shabby-chic aesthetic.

Listed with Mark Peterson and Dana Bambace of Compass for $2,799,000 in late December, it’s a $196,000 price drop from last May.

The seller is “an amazing lady who bought the property in 2004,” Peterson says. She has “built treehouses all over the world and renovated Victorian homes in New England.” Some of her projects were featured on HGTV, and one design was ranked among “the most spectacular treehouses in the world” by Wanderlust.

“She made Big Sur her home and her art, while she combined her joys of gardening, creative carpentry, art, and her deep respect for the environment, as well as the history of Big Sur,” says Peterson.

And her touch can be found in the interiors. The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath home features white-washed timber walls, beams, and ceilings. There are walls of windows, a gorgeous river stone fireplace in the living room, and a sliding glass wall to bring the outdoors in.

Stepping inside is like going back in time. “If these walls could talk,” Bambace says, “the stories of early Big Sur it would tell!”

Built in 1929, this is one of the area’s oldest homes, constructed by the Trotter family, settlers in this region, using local redwood and stone.

Mature gardens on the property, ocean views during the day, and stargazing at night, plus access to fresh spring water make this a retreat the next owner might never want to leave.

Outdoor perks include a hot tub and shower, a private trail through the redwoods to a secluded beach, and a swing bed in the garden.

Peterson and Bambace hope to attract Californians to this sweet cottage, particularly Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, as San Jose is only 100 miles north. They will also make a pitch to international buyers, capitalizing on Big Sur’s acclaim in recent years, including this 100-mile coastline serving as the backdrop for the HBO series “Big Little Lies.” Luxe resorts such Post Ranch Inn and Ventana have also caused a spike in local tourism, along with hiking nearby at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Writers, artists, musicians, and Hollywood “are not new to this magnificent coastline,” says Peterson. “Big Sur’s popularity has erupted with the growth of social media. It has become a year-round destination.”

Some of the musicians who have nodded to Big Sur in their song lyrics and music videos include Alanis Morissette, Jack Johnson, Chase Rice, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Peterson says.

Buyers in Big Sur tend to be drawn to the remote isolation in which time appears to stand still.

“Imagine going back in time, the charming beauty of simplicity, the artistic evidence of handmade everything,” Bambace says. “Artists are inspired by a hybrid landscape of mountains, beaches, birds, and sea, plus bohemian inns and ultraprivate homes.”
