Luxe La Jolla Home Comes With Coastal Views and Cool Vibes

Biologists don’t usually own stylish, multimillion-dollar beach homes. But sometimes the molecules line up just right.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this modern beach house in La Jolla, CA, is where prominent biotechnologist, geneticist, and businessman Craig Venter calls home. However, he’s now ready for a new organism to inhabit his home, which is on the market for $8,448,000.

Venter purchased the place in 2007 for $5.95 million and immediately set about updating it. In April 2019 he listed the home for $9.75 million. The price was reduced over the ensuing months.

The intriguing, 6,931-square-foot home overlooking the Pacific is a showpiece, and the discounted price may encourage a buyer to put the place under the microscope.

Venter spent about 18 months and $3 million to get the three-story, ocean-view home into pristine shape, according to the Journal. Improvements included expanding windows and glass doors, converting an office into a screening room, adding a gym and sauna, and installing a 900-square-foot front deck. He also added solar panels and energy-efficient LED lights.

The four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home has many other features, but the main attraction is the glorious ocean views. Built on a gated, 1-acre lot, the home features many rooms with views of the water and coastline.

The large outdoor pool is ideal for soaking in the sun as well as the awe-inspiring views. If you tire of the views, you can head inside and enjoy the home’s wine cellar and solarium.

Listing photos show the home is partly staged, which could mean that the 73-year-old scientist and his wife, Heather Kowalski, may be spending more time in their townhouse in Alexandria, VA. Over the past several years, Venter has been studying DNA via the Human Longevity project.
