TV showrunner John Wells is selling his massive spread on Kauai’s north shore for $40.5 million. The man behind “ER,” “The West Wing,” “Third Watch,” and other TV and film projects is ready to part with his 372-acre Wai Kala Ranch.
The property sits at the foot of Mount Namahana, and is just up the road from the huge piece of prime real estate belonging to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the small town of Kilauea, HI.
Wai Kala has spectacular mountain views, streams, ponds, waterfalls, swimming holes, riding trails, forests, and pasture. The offering comes with an equestrian business, two homes, and development opportunities.
Real estate records show that the ranch was purchased by Wai Kala LLC, a corporate entity connected to Wells.

Less than 4 miles to the beach, the acreage is described as “bountiful and remote.” The grounds are dotted with hundreds of palm trees, tropical plants, and both imported and natural flora.
The property comprises five adjacent parcels and two recently remodeled homes. For a buyer tempted by the idea of an even larger compound, a residence can be added to each parcel.
The 3,500-square-foot main residence has four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. It features floor-to-ceiling windows and an updated kitchen. There’s also a two-bedroom, 1,080-square-foot residence on the property. Remodels on both homes were completed last year.
Kai Wala Ranch is also the location of Silver Falls Stables, which would be included in the purchase. The equestrian operation consists of horses, a farm, business equipment, offices, a welcome center, stables, and a riding arena. If a buyer were interested in just Silver Falls Stables, it’s available with145 acres of land for $20 million.
Wells, who directed “August: Osage County” and “Burnt,” has served as showrunner or executive producer for “Shameless” and “Animal Kingdom.” His company John Wells Productions is based at Warner Bros., where he signed a five-year deal that runs through 2024.
