A Victorian-era mansion in Eureka, CA, painted a rosy hue and known as the “Pink Lady,” has come on the market for $1.29 million. This particular Pink Lady is not to be confused with San Francisco’s famous “Pink Painted Lady,” which has also had a fascinating history.
The historic residence in the very north of Northern California last sold in 2005, for $1.25 million. The majestic mansion initially came on the market a year ago, but an offer to buy it fell through. Now the home is up for sale again, with the same asking price as in 2019.
The home has many options for the future, in addition to plenty of history.
The Victorian beauty was built in 1889 by a lumber magnate, William Carson, apparently as a wedding gift for his son Milton Carson. It’s directly across from the father’s handsome estate, the Carson mansion, which is considered to be “the most grand Victorian home in America.”
Carson logged redwood, so the structure “is made entirely from redwood,” according to the listing agent, Jill Macdonald with Coldwell Banker Cutten Realty.
“It’s a very significant structure,” she adds.
After William Carson died, in 1912, the son moved across the street, but the Pink Lady remained in the family until the 1920s. The Carson family eventually left the area, and the Carson mansion has been a private club since the 1950s.
The blush-colored home remained a private residence until about the mid-20th century, according to Macdonald.
After that, “It went through a bunch of different uses,” she says, everything from a popular restaurant to office space. But despite all the changes over the past 130 years, the home has been the same shade for most of the 20th century, and has locally been known as the Pink Lady.

The current owner purchased the property 15 years ago, and used it as a second home, according to Macdonald. Over the past five years, the place has become a popular short-term rental, thanks to the grassy lawn, picturesque gardens, and water views—a perfect backdrop for weddings and special events.
The new owner will also have a number of options for the property, because it is zoned for both commercial and residential uses. The home could be a residence, rental, event space, retail shop, or office space.
When the current owner picked up the home, it was being used as offices.
She updated the home to a residence when she bought it, and also added 2.5 more bathrooms, so the layout now has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and 4,560 square feet of living space.
From the grand front hall, you enter upon two parlors and a formal dining room. An elaborate staircase leads to the upper rooms, including a turret with views of Humboldt Bay.
Located about 4.5 hours north of San Francisco, the port city of Eureka boasts many historic Victorians.
Original restored details inside include intricate moldings, woodwork, stained glass, decorative fireplaces, and pocket doors.
With its views of Carson mansion, the property is set on a quarter of a block of professionally landscaped and fenced yard.
It also includes a carriage house, which has already been developed into two separate commercial spaces on two floors. It could be used as a guesthouse or offices.
A new owner is likely to want to update the kitchen in the main home.
But overall, the property retains much of its original character, Macdonald notes. The older kitchen hasn’t seemed to deter vacationers from staying at the colorful residence, or prospective buyers from inquiring about the historic residence.
After all, Macdonald says, “Who wouldn’t want to stay at the Pink Lady?”
